History isn't just about a bunch of dead people. Instead, it is our story, shared story in fact, that reminds us how we got to where we are. Some of this story is celebratory and highlights successes and things they got right. Some of it should make us pause and reflect on how we can, how we must do better.
The simple fact of history is that we cannot go back and change anything. But we can examine the events in our shared past and use them as learning lessons. We can do an honest inventory and commit to doing better. We must study and examine, but never try to erase.
I will teach history so that we examine events and themes through the lens of history, and not solely through the lens of today. I commit to you that we will speak truthfully and civilly when we discuss any of our topics. Finally, I will do my very best to share my love of history and present it in a way that helps us all to remember that today, we are writing tomorrow's history.
Everyone approaches our history in their own way. I love to read different perspectives because for me, it is through that lens of others that we understand how others experienced that same history.
