In this section, we will engage with the European settlers in North America. Several topics including trade, colonialism, and the occupancy of land prior to explorers and after explorers will be looked at.
Though the narrative has long been Christopher Columbus discovering the New World, this learning will not be framed entirely like that. Nor will our learning be framed as an expose on the evils of colonialism. We will explore the facts and events as they happened. Wherever they lead us, that is for you to make a decision of how you feel about it.
Christopher Columbus did, in fact, discover the New World from European perspective. From Native American perspective, the lands of the Western Hemisphere were already occupied. This unit will look at the intersection of these two views and experiences.
We will have readings, engaging forums, research, and discussions that will explore both perspectives and give you an encompassing contrast of how we view historical events and how we approach sensitive subjects.
History isn't always glamorous or pretty, and I ask that as you learn here, that we explore the materials provided, check out any links that I put up, and continue to be life learners. This should facilitate discussion and further reading!
